Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum Welcomes New Site Administrator
The National Museum of Civil War Medicine is excited to announce that Madeleine Thompson has joined the team as Site Administrator of the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum in Washington, D.C. The historic site includes the boarding house rooms in which Barton collected supplies for soldiers during the Civil War and ran the Office of Missing Soldiers postwar, helping to locate or identify more than 22,000 missing soldiers.
The site is one of three managed and administered by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, including its namesake museum in downtown Frederick, Md., and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum on the Antietam Battlefield.
“We’re looking forward to revitalizing the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum and bringing it back online to its pre-COVID visitation and programming levels,” says NMCWM Executive Director David Price. “We know Madeleine’s enthusiasm and expertise are just the injection of energy the site needs to be a success and share Clara’s story with a wider audience.”
Prior to joining the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Madeleine served as a talent acquisition specialist at a biopharmaceutical company, where she gained experience in building internal and external partnerships throughout the full-cycle recruitment process. Thompson earned a Master of Arts in Sexual Dissidence from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. Her graduate dissertation explored themes of feminine resistance, religion, and medical practices within the Medieval bedroom. While she has familiarity with modern healthcare, she says her passion has always been historical.
“As a child, I was intrigued by the Civil War following family trips to Antietam and consumed all I could on the topic,” says Thompson, who joined the Museum in September. “I’m delighted that my adolescent interests have finally become useful and I’m overjoyed to be joining the NMCWM team.”
The Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM for walk-ins. Group tours can be pre-arranged on additional days.
The National Museum of Civil War Medicine is the premier center for the preservation and research of the legacy of Civil War Medical innovation and humanitarianism. As a living institution, we utilize artifacts, storytelling, and the historic lessons derived from that era to educate and inspire, connecting the challenges of the past with present issues. The nonprofit, charitable organization also operates the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office in Washington, D.C., and the Pry House Field Hospital on the Antietam National Battlefield.
